lyrics

I’m back on the streets of my hometown, there’s boards on windows, streetlights out
Sidewalks buckle like broken bones and every face says, “leave me alone.”
I ask a stranger what’s gone wrong, he stares at me for far too long, says,
“Hey Bud, it’s Mike from ‘83, come and have a whiskey with me.”
"You see the factory shut its doors, took all our jobs to foreign shores.
Workers there get ten dollars a day, and that's a living wage they say."

CHORUS:
Can’t believe my eyes, my town’s left to die
Right here in America
A city begging please
Down on its knees
Right here in America

So Mike he told me about big banks, ask for a loan they say no thanks
Fed prints money interest free but nothing left for the community.
I asked Mike if there was any help, he took another shot and let out a welp
Said, “no one gives a good God damn, and I feel worthless as a man.”
“No surprise this situation, lots of drugs, no rehabilitation.
We are lost and forgotten, headed towards the very bottom.”

I asked Mike what a friend could do, he heaved a sigh and said we’re screwed
Unless they hear us loud and clear we need jobs to stay right here
I told the bar don’t pour no more, paid the bill, and we hit the door
Mike and I walked to the gates of his hell, the factory dark, we stood there a spell
“It’s my hometown and I believe in her, and the working class we’re not leavin’ her
This is still the promised land and we’re here to make another stand.”
